What temperature should you actually heat shisha to?

Two heat zones, not one. Top heat creates clouds. Side heat controls flavor and bowl life. And neither one stays constant through a session. Here is how VOLTA's heat actually works.

For most of hookah history, the answer to this question has been some version of "until it tastes right." This was acceptable when nobody had a way to measure the temperature. It is no longer acceptable.

But there is a second problem with the question itself. It assumes one temperature. A coal session has one temperature, more or less. VOLTA has two heat zones, set to two different temperatures, and the relationship between them is what determines what your session actually does.

I am going to explain the system. With numbers.

Why two heat zones

A traditional hookah bowl has one heat source. Coal sits on top, heat radiates down, the tobacco below it is what produces the smoke. Whatever the coal is doing affects everything in the bowl at once.

VOLTA has two heating elements operating independently.

  • The top heater (HE1) sits above the tobacco. It produces direct radiant heat from above, similar in concept to where coal would sit.
  • The side heater (HE2) is built into the ceramic chamber walls. It heats the tobacco from the sides through conduction — the wall touches the tobacco and warms it from contact.

These two heat sources do completely different jobs. Top radiates. Side conducts. Mixing them up is the most common reason people misunderstand how the device works.

The top heater: 220 to 320°C

The top heater is the cloud control.

Direct radiant heat on the surface of the tobacco vaporizes glycerin fast. The higher the top, the more glycerin vaporizes per pull, the denser the cloud. The usable range runs from 220°C up to a hard ceiling at 320°C.

What the top heater is doing: turning the surface layer of your packed bowl into vapor. Repeatedly. Throughout the session.

What the top heater is not doing: scorching the bowl. Radiant heat from above does not stay on the tobacco long enough to scorch it. The vapor leaves, the surface cools slightly, the next radiation cycle vaporizes more. You can run the top heater at 320°C all session without scorching, as long as the side is set correctly.

This is the part that surprises users coming from coal. With coal, more heat meant more burning. With VOLTA, top heat is for clouds, and burning has nothing to do with it.

The side heater: 120 to 200°C (with an opening spike)

The side heater is doing something completely different.

The ceramic walls of the chamber are in direct contact with the tobacco mass. Heat from the walls conducts into the leaf slowly and continuously. This is what releases the deeper flavor compounds, controls bowl longevity, and determines whether the session lasts an hour or burns out in twenty minutes.

The steady-state range for the side heater is 120 to 200°C.

  • 120 to 150°C — gentle extraction, longest session, mellow flavor profile
  • 150 to 180°C — balanced extraction, the most-used steady-state range
  • 180 to 200°C — aggressive extraction, intense flavor, shorter session length

Push the side above 200°C in steady state and the tobacco mass starts to scorch from the inside. The leaf in contact with the walls cooks faster than it should, flavor flattens, and the bowl runs out before its time.

The exception is the opening of the session. Cloud-focused presets briefly spike the side heater to 230–240°C for the first 3 to 5 minutes only. This is intentional. The spike kicks the tobacco into vaporization mode quickly, then the side temperature drops to safe steady-state before any real damage to the bowl can happen. It is a fast ignition, not a sustained operating condition.

Why temperature changes during the session

This is the part most users do not expect.

A session is not a single temperature setting. It is a curve. The bowl needs different temperatures at different points in its life.

  • At the start, the bowl is cold. You need elevated heat from both zones to bring the tobacco up to operating range quickly.
  • In the early-middle, the bowl is producing maximum vapor. Top heat goes to its peak. Side heat drops to its working range.
  • In the late-middle, the tobacco has released most of its moisture. Side heat drops further to extend the life of what remains.
  • At the end, both temperatures ease down to extract the last accessible flavor without scorching the dried-out leaf.

A static temperature for the entire session — what coal users do by default, because coal cannot be controlled — produces inconsistent results. A staged temperature profile, with both zones adjusting at the right moments, is what makes a 90-minute session work.

This is why VOLTA uses presets.

How a preset actually works

A preset is a multi-stage temperature curve, programmed in advance, that handles the staging for you.

Take Blonde Leaf as a worked example. It is a 60-minute session designed for standard modern shisha.

Note: our default presets are always improving, so the exact temperatures and stage values below reflect the current baseline and may have changed by the time you read this. Use them as a guide, not a fixed spec.

What this is doing:

  • Stage 1 preheats the bowl. Moderate top, slightly elevated side. The tobacco comes up to operating temperature.
  • Stage 2 punches the top heat to maximum for peak cloud production. Side drops to working range.
  • Stages 3 and 4 hold the top heat near max while the side continues to drop, preventing scorch as the bowl ages.
  • Stage 5 is the long tail of the session. Top eases off slightly. Side runs cool to extract the final flavor without burning what is left.

Five stages, every value chosen for what the bowl needs at that point. No user adjustment required. The temperature is changing the whole time, and the user is doing nothing except smoking.

This is what "what temperature should I heat shisha to" actually looks like as an answer. There is no single number. There is a curve.

When to use presets vs custom settings

For most users, most of the time, presets are the right answer. They were built by the people who designed the device, tested against the specific tobacco categories they were built for, and refined over hundreds of test sessions.

Custom settings make sense for:

  • Tobaccos that do not fit cleanly into one of the preset categories
  • Specific session goals that no preset is optimized for (a 2-hour mellow session, for example, or a 30-minute high-intensity session)
  • Users who want to develop their own profile for a specific tobacco they smoke often

The custom mode lets you set the top and side temperatures independently and run them at whatever values you want. The same principles still apply: top for clouds, side for flavor and bowl life, side capped at 200°C in steady state.

Most experienced users start with presets, find one or two that work for their main tobaccos, and only build custom profiles for specific edge cases. Working from a preset baseline and adjusting one variable at a time is significantly faster than designing a profile from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum temperature VOLTA can reach?

The top heater (HE1) has a ceiling of 320°C. The side heater (HE2) has a steady-state ceiling of 200°C, with a brief allowance for higher temperatures (up to 240°C) only in the first 3 to 5 minutes of cloud-focused presets. These limits exist because exceeding them either has no benefit (top above 320°C) or actively damages the session (side above 200°C in steady state).

Why does the side heater never go as high as the top heater?

Because they are doing different jobs. The top heater is radiating heat at the surface of the tobacco. The side heater is in direct contact with the tobacco. Conducted heat scorches at much lower temperatures than radiated heat does. The numbers are different because the physics are different.

Can you run a session at a single temperature instead of a preset curve?

You can, but you will get less from the bowl. The bowl needs different things at different times in the session, and a flat temperature gives the bowl the same thing the whole time. Most flat-temperature sessions either underperform at the start, scorch in the middle, or fade at the end.

Why do the cloud presets briefly run the side heater so hot?

To kick the tobacco into vaporization mode quickly. A cold bowl needs more energy to start producing clouds than a warm bowl needs to keep producing clouds. The opening spike is short enough that the bowl does not scorch, but long enough to get the session producing dense smoke from the first pull.

Is there a default temperature setting that works for everything?

The closest universal default is top 280°C and side 170°C, held flat. It produces decent clouds and decent flavor across most modern tobaccos. It is not as good as a preset matched to your specific tobacco, but it works as a starting point for new tobaccos you have not yet learned.
