How to set up VOLTA, start to finish

This is the practical article. No comparison to coal, no deep dive on heating physics. Just the complete VOLTA setup process in order, from the moment you unbox it to the moment you are in a session.

Seven steps. The longest wait is 8 minutes of preheat. Everything else is minutes or seconds.

What you need before you start

From the box: VOLTA device, swappable battery module, 2 ceramic chambers, 10 metal screens, USB-C charging cable, and the user manual.

Your own: Hookah base, stem, hose, and shisha tobacco. You do not need a separate bowl. VOLTA holds the tobacco in its own ceramic chamber and replaces the bowl.

Step 1: Insert the battery

Slide the battery module into the bottom of VOLTA until it clicks into place. The central airflow channel aligns automatically when the battery is correctly seated.

If you are setting up for the first time, check the battery level on the OLED display when you power on. A full charge gives you 1 to 1.5 hours of session time, and USB-C pass-through supports sessions of up to 120 minutes.

Step 2: Pack the ceramic chamber

The ceramic chamber is where the tobacco goes. It is VOLTA's bowl, and it takes around 10g. Pack it on the same principles as any hookah bowl: distribute the tobacco evenly, keep it loose enough to preserve airflow, and do not press it down.

Dark leaf wants a lighter pack and a lower starting heat. Blonde leaf is more forgiving. If you are using unwashed tobacco, start conservative and work the heat up.

Each VOLTA ships with two ceramic chambers, with spares available in a 4-pack. That makes it easy to keep one chamber for a flavor that ghosts hard and another for everything else.

Step 3: Seat VOLTA on your hookah

VOLTA seats on a standard hookah stem using the supplied silicone grommet, in the same place a bowl would normally sit. Everything from the stem down is unchanged: base, water, stem, downstem, hose, grommets and purge valve all stay exactly as they are.

VOLTA is compatible with most standard hookah stems and bases. It does not sit on top of a phunnel, vortex or Egyptian bowl, because it replaces the bowl rather than using one.

Step 4: Power on and select your setting

Press the power button. The OLED display lights up. Select a starting heat setting, or scroll to a saved preset if you have one. For a first session, a medium setting gives you a good baseline.

Step 5: Wait for preheat (~8 minutes)

The display shows the temperature rising in real time. Use the time to set up the rest of your hookah: fill the base, connect the hose, get comfortable. By the time you are ready, VOLTA is ready.

Step 6: Start your session

Pull. Adjust the heat on the first few pulls if you need to. Once it is dialled in, leave the controls alone and enjoy the session. The device holds the heat at your set level for the rest of the session, so there is no drift to manage.

Step 7: Manage the battery if needed

If the battery runs low before the session ends, you have two options: plug in via USB-C for pass-through charging, or swap the battery module for a charged spare, which takes seconds and does not power the device off.
