Different bowl types need different packs. A phunnel is not packed like an Egyptian. Here is the right technique for each, and which bowl works best for the session you actually want.

Most articles about packing a hookah bowl describe the same generic technique and apply it to every bowl shape. This is not how the bowl actually works.
A phunnel, an Egyptian, and a vortex are designed differently and behave differently under heat. The pack technique that maximizes a phunnel will choke an Egyptian. The pack that works on an Egyptian will run dry in a phunnel. If you have been getting inconsistent sessions from different bowls, the bowl is probably not the problem. The pack is.
Here is the actual breakdown by bowl type, with technique for each.
Before getting into the packs, it is worth understanding what each bowl is trying to do.
Hookah bowls have to handle two things at once: hold the tobacco in a way that lets heat reach all of it, and manage the juices that drip out as the tobacco heats up. Glycerin and molasses melt and run down through the tobacco during a session. Where those juices go determines how long the bowl produces flavor and clouds.
A bowl that lets the juices drain into the stem cuts the session short. A bowl that holds the juices keeps producing flavor. The shape of the bottom of the bowl is doing most of the work here.
That is the principle. The different bowl types are different solutions to the same problem.
A phunnel has a single raised spire in the center of the bowl, with no holes through the bottom of the dish. The juices drip down the sides of the spire and collect at the base, where they stay through the session and continue feeding flavor into the heated tobacco above.
This is the modern standard for most cloud-focused and flavor-focused sessions. Brands like Tangiers, Harmony, and Crown all use phunnel-style designs.
How to pack a phunnel:
The phunnel rewards a fluff pack. The juices stay where they should, the airflow is consistent because the air is being pulled around the spire and through the tobacco from the sides. Pack too dense and you choke off the airflow. Pack too loose and the tobacco scatters when heated.
The single most common mistake on a phunnel is overpacking the area near the spire. Leave a small visible gap at the top of the spire. The vapor needs to escape through the spire, and tobacco blocking the channel kills the session.
The Egyptian bowl is the older design. It has multiple small holes drilled through the bottom of the bowl, and a curved interior shape that holds the tobacco above the holes.
This design has been around for longer than any other bowl shape and is what most people picture when they think of a "hookah bowl." It works, but it has structural limitations. The juices drain through the holes into the downstem. This means the session is producing flavor only as long as the freshest layer of tobacco still has glycerin and molasses in it. Once that runs through, the bowl is finished.
How to pack an Egyptian:
Egyptians do better with denser, oilier tobaccos that hold their moisture longer. Lighter tobaccos run dry on an Egyptian faster than they should. A pack that is too loose on an Egyptian will fall through the holes. A pack that is too dense will not draw.
The honest assessment is that Egyptian bowls are a solved problem with newer designs. They still work. They are not the bowl I would choose for a long session if I had the option to use a phunnel.
A vortex bowl looks like a hybrid between a phunnel and an Egyptian. It has a raised center, but instead of a single spire with no holes, the vortex has multiple holes arranged around the raised center.
The idea is to get some of the heat distribution benefits of a phunnel (the raised center forces heat outward toward the tobacco) while keeping the airflow pattern of a multi-hole design. The juices collect on the raised center rather than draining straight through.
How to pack a vortex:
Vortex bowls are forgiving. They work with a wider range of tobacco types than either phunnels or Egyptians. They produce slightly less cloud output than a phunnel but more than a traditional Egyptian, and they hold flavor longer than an Egyptian without quite reaching phunnel territory.
If you are buying your first quality bowl and you do not know what kind of session you want yet, a vortex is the safest choice.
The category has not been standing still. A few designs that have earned a place:
Flat bowls. Shallow, flat-bottomed bowls designed for even heat distribution and shorter sessions with thinner packs. Pair well with electric heat sources because the flat surface heats more uniformly.
Harmony bowls. A specific design from Werkbund with deep walls and a curved interior, designed for dense packs of dark leaf shisha. Niche but excellent for what it does.
Custom hand-thrown bowls. Small ceramicists are producing bowls for specific tobacco brands and session styles. The variation is wide and often experimental.
Some rules apply regardless of bowl shape.

A few things I see repeatedly:
Packing the bowl an hour before the session. Modern shisha continues to release moisture and air-pressure changes between packing and lighting. A bowl packed too early can settle into a denser configuration than what you packed.
Using the same pack technique on every bowl. This is the entire point of this article. A phunnel pack on an Egyptian will fall through the holes. An Egyptian pack on a phunnel will choke the airflow.
Pressing the tobacco down to "make it fit." If the tobacco does not fit, use less tobacco. Pressing creates dense pockets that burn unevenly and choke the airflow.
Ignoring the bowl-to-tobacco match. Lighter, modern tobaccos are formulated for phunnel and vortex bowls. Dark leaf and unwashed tobaccos are formulated for tighter packs that hold their structure through longer heat exposure. Mismatching them works less well than matching them.
VOLTA ships with ceramic chambers designed around the phunnel principle. The juices are retained, the tobacco gets heated from the top and surrounding sides simultaneously, and the pack does not have to fight the heat source.
If you have a favorite phunnel or vortex bowl from a traditional setup, VOLTA's chamber is designed to feel familiar in terms of pack technique. The same fluff pack you would use on a phunnel works in the VOLTA ceramic chamber.
What changes is that the heat is no longer variable. You are not packing around the assumption that the coal placement might be off, the wind might shift, or the rotation might be late. You pack the bowl, set the temperature, and the bowl runs at that temperature for the full session.
For most modern tobaccos, a phunnel produces the most consistent flavor through a long session because it holds the glycerin and molasses in the bowl rather than draining them. For dark leaf and unwashed tobaccos, deeper specialty bowls like the Harmony can produce richer, more concentrated flavor at the cost of cloud volume.
For a standard medium bowl, around 10g is the right amount. For larger phunnel bowls, 12–15g. For small flat bowls and travel-sized bowls, 7–8g. The bowl should be full, not overflowing, with about 2–5mm of space below the rim depending on bowl type.
You can use foil with any bowl, but the technique varies. Phunnels need a tighter foil seal with smaller, evenly distributed holes. Egyptians can take wider holes because the bowl shape distributes heat differently. HMDs and electric heaters like VOLTA remove the foil question entirely.
Usually one of three things. The pack is too dense, blocking airflow. The tobacco is overheated, burning off the glycerin too fast. The tobacco was dry before packing. Run through those three before assuming the bowl itself is the issue.
For experienced users, yes. Different tobaccos and different session goals reward different bowls. For users who are still finding their preferences, one good vortex or phunnel covers most situations. There is no reason to own six bowls if you only ever pack the same tobacco.
